Strange story. Why did she, apparently, refuse to learn English?
How did she get a job in the first place?

My husband's family were refugees. He was a child when he came into this country. They didn't come in with loads of others and swiftly learned our language and adapted to our ways. Multicultural is only a problem when immigrants come in large numbers and expect to live as they used to with an entirely different culture.

not unheard of, i have come across this myself, being in hospital where any number of nurses were deficient in English....
It seems that her employers did everything possible to help her. Very bizarre actions from the lady involved.
Quite right. A possibility of disaster.
And just a few were not what we define as nurses at all. After a short adaptation course they get a UK pin number. I found out a few myself over the years lovely people, caring, and kind but were not nurses at home one was an auxillary two were cleaners.
scary Rowan if that is the case..
Recruitment standards have slipped.
for a long while.. ^^
I had a similar experience when teaching, a number of supply teachers from outside Europe had very poor English and the pupils couldn't understand them. When I asked the Deputy who dealt with supply teachers to ask the agency for someone with decent English I was called the 'r' word!
that is outrageous.
My sons partner teaches people from various countries. The other day one of the pupils walked into the corner of the room full of students and took a dump into the waste paper bin. He was politely informed that we don't do that sort of thing here.
disgusting thing to do..
Rich tapestry, cultural mix, broadened horizons, more informed world view etc until the wheels come off.
The joys of multiculturalism ....
i know you are being ironic but i am wondering at this so called multiculturalism....doesn't seem to work all that well
That sort of disgusting behaviour has been rife amongst some of our foreign visitors for years.
My wife trained for three years as a SRN back in the 70s. One of her placements was the famous Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Paddington. In those days it was a private wing and the patients were mainly Arabs. The rooms had en-suite bathrooms. Many of the patients just got out their bed and deliberately defecated on the floor knowing that someone would clear up after them. ( in those days it would be a student nurse). A typical attitude. We pay for your services and can treat you as we wish!
yuck
Nurses need to be on it and comprehensive and able to take instructions quickly, efficiently and effectively.

If you can't speak the lingo then you're literally the worst person for the job, regardless of your medical knowledge.

You could be told to give someone one thing and you mishear and give them something else.

Dangerous.
"The joys of multiculturalism ...."

Grow up.
Don't be rude.
Would be nice if you took your own advice. Using this to make a juvenile dig at multiculturalism couldn't be seen as more rude.

Practice what you preach.
