Lets hope they scanned their Clubcard first......
Never heard of that before. How do they get away with it? Surely there must be some sort of safeguard.
My God, as Jack said, there has to be something in place otherwise they could be losing millions
How do you know they took the merchandise?

Maybe the payment was declined?
It could be a till error, Derek.

A year or so back I was shopping in a 24-hour Tesco at about 3am. My contactless card was initially rejected at the self-service till (for a bil of just under £30), so I had to use chip-&-pin. I managed to mis-key a digit, so I then had to repeat the process. Even though I was certain that I'd keyed in the correct number at the second attempt, my card was again rejected. With a third time of trying though my card was accepted and I got a receipt. However the till was still showing that I'd not paid!

I made a point of finding an assistant (which isn't always easy at 3am in Tesco) to show her
(a) what I'd got in my bag ;
(b) the receipt for all my stuff ; and
(c) what was still left showing on the till display,
as I didn't want someone to look at that display and think that I'd walked off without paying.

The assistant was totally baffled but she checked the date and time on the receipt and accepted that I must have paid. (She asked if I'd mind if she kept the receipt, as she needed to show it to a manager when he came on duty later on. I said that I didn't have a problem with that, as long as she was happy that I wasn't nicking stuff from their store!).

the machine was waiting for payment when i got bit it thats how i know and was confirmed by the staff when i reported it to them
I know someone who put their purchases in as loose bananas. He was buying fillet steak for the price of bananas.

I couldn't do it.

and i may add the staff were in a flap about it
One would hope that the self checkouts are covered by cctv, derek. If only the stores would use good cctv photos to display a rogues gallery!
Perhaps an ABer who works in a supermarket could tell us more about how the system operates.
Stores do have their rogues gallery believe me
Our store always has an assistant in the self service area.

i did say to the checkout staff they would be on cctv, if then they could follow them on cctv to there vehicle they could trace them ,but take action..who knows
Question Author
tony there are 6 check outs operating out of twelve due to virus and have screens up,, when its busy as its was not possible to keep and eye out for every rogue and (the rogue) would obviously be aware of the short comings at tesco today
Just fancy, derek, you could have been standing next to that thief whilst shopping. I always take good care of my purse in the shops as one never knows who is around.
Are you sure, Bobbi? You may remember that until about 10 years ago the Tyne Metro regularly published details in stations of fare dodgers who had been taken to court. Suddenly this stopped. Probably something to do with yooman rights.
The way it works , the local rogues will be watched and followed on cctv but then you’ll get the opportunist rogue who’s not known to the store security, they are known to train/ bus hop to other areas to ‘nick’
Yes JD, I worked on Customer Service in the now defunct BHS , in their case you’d get someone who’d perhaps lifted a suit or a coat from somewhere like York but they’d as for a refund at a further away store , eventually they too become a feature on Rogues Gallery which was strategically placed out of customers sight
That's the difference. Transgressors are no longer shown to the public.
Nor should they be, imagine the scene if a customer thinks they've spotted someone from the rogues gallery and tackles them.

Not a good move.
