What works with terrorists is cross border cooperation and intelligence.
Same applies in cases like this: if there is proper investigative work being carried out then the absence or otherwise of border posts is largely irrelevant.
For years police work in GB was hampered by the division of all the different forces in all the different counties.
Other than that, for large parts of Europe it makes little more sense now to have borders between those countries as county borders would make sense here.

Irrelevant - and I disagree. It has to be more effective to have border checks than allow criminals free rein to roam wherever they will.
