//Out of interest, which (BAME) British people, on their own merits, should feature on an issue of coins?// None. Coins should have "heads" (the Monarch's) on one side only. The other should be "tails" such as a national emblem, coat-of-arms or similar. Don't know where this idea of putting commoners' images on coins and banknotes stems from. The earliest...
//While in Britain he established the Indian Volunteers Corps to try and recruit Indians to the British war effort. He also trained in first aid and helped to nurse the wounded.//
yes, Mamya, but apart from establishing the Indian Volunteers Corps, training in first aid, helping to nurse the wounded, building roads and public baths and introducing writing, what did Gandhi ever do for us?
Gandhi on learning that the British were to set up schools for the African children.
"“We humbly submit that the decision to open the school for all Coloured children is unjust to the Indian community, and is a departure from the assurance given by the then Minister of Education, as also Sir Albert Hime and Mr. Robert Russell, that the school will be reserved for Indian children only.” 21/10/1905.
“The Boer Government insulted the Indians by classing them with the Kaffirs.” 01/06/1906
“It was a gross injustice to seek to place Indians in the same class as the Kaffirs.” 22/05/1906
“Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilised – the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals. Each ward contains nearly 50 to 60 of them. They often started rows and fought among themselves. The reader can easily imagine the plight of the poor Indian thrown into such company!” 03/07/1907
There is more... much more....As yet the blm dahlings have not had their radar effectively tuned.

Don't know where it was but I read recently that the wokey-wokey bandshow had him their sights for his activities in South Africa. When everyone eulogises about India and it's independence it needs to be remembered that the poor Indian has never been as abused as he is by the rich Indians today.
jno, //apart from establishing the Indian Volunteers Corps, training in first aid, helping to nurse the wounded, building roads and public baths and introducing writing, what did Gandhi ever do for us? //
Apart from establishing the Indian Volunteers Corps I don't believe he was a first for us with any of the others.
A dissident little stirrer or the excrement, wherever in the world he went. He developed into a virulent anti-British little creep (after gaining his law degree from UCL and being called to the Bar in the Inner Temple first, natch) who probably did more to foment the current religious and caste divisions in India (which are far worse than any found in the UK) than any other single person.
I hope to get one of the coins. There are machines in amusement arcades where you can get a coin compressed to wafer thickness. I'll either put it in one of those or take it to my favourite heritage railway line and get one of the staff to place it on top of the rails. I can then watch it get crushed as one of my favourite steam locomotives rolls its 120 tons over it.
