There was talk on the news that energy could cost on average over £3000 a year for the average household by October if the crisis continues. There are many who could not possibly afford this. There would be social unrest I'm sure but what could be done? Only the eco loons would be happy about it but for normal people it would be disastrous. Is it time to abandon the ludicrous dash to net zero and start getting more north sea gas and start franking?

Or fracking even.
What can be done?

Well for the UK and the US we can open up our mines, oil drilling and fracking. But with a green Prime Minister and her husband ensconced in No10 there isnt a hope in hell of that happening.

So its freeze or go to jail for our pensioners. The Eco nuts wont give a jot.
Fracking? The fears about earthquakes haven't gone away Dave.
I do agree with you that the dash to net zero should be put on the back-burner until the current situation is resolved - one way or t'other.
False fears propagated by the eco mob.
I live in dread of future heating bills, but at least I can afford them. My heart bleeds for those that can't. I'm not a fan of fracking.
False or not, YMF, they haven't gone away. Neither, i assume, have those in live in those areas that suffered tremors when fracking was first tried.
I was for for fracking but the failed attempt s to overxome earth tremor issues and get fracking approved mean we don't even know how much there is... so even with a nongreen goverment it would be 5 years before it starts to help.
Yes although I am a bit miffed the veracity of my link was called in question. I'm well aware of the fakes.
There have been a few on Russian mainstream TV in the leadup to war, which were almost laughable.
eg: a report that a border post on the Russian side of the border had been shelled by Ukraine. It was accompanied by footage of a rather sorry-looking shed in the middle of some trees.
Then there was the poor man who'd lost his leg after being hit by a Russian shell. on close inspection it was clear he had a prosthesis that had been conveniently removed.
My favourite: Ukraine's "battle plans" for attacking the separatist regions, miraculously captured: all in Russian,
All this would be funny were it not so tragic.
Sorry wrong thread!

Had an email from Shell Energy. Now I understand gas & electric prices must rise due to the increased cost of gas worldwide BUT my combined "standing charges" are going up from around 50p per day to 80p per day.
So even if I use NO gas or leccy I will be subjected to a significant price rise and be paying £25 per month. Not sure how they can justify that!
I dont think standing charges are capped.
Standing charges are capped.

Unfortunately the easily accessible oil and gas and coal have been mined and production cost for the rest mean inevitable price rises, and government subsides or reduced household consumption looks like the only way to keep energy bills from spiraling up.
I'm sure we'll be treated as a special case, just like the banks were, when it comes to long-term support.

Yes, really sure.
some people have been demanding a resumption of fracking. As long as it's their garden, I suppose that's okay.
