I was completing my shopping in the self service section of my local supermarket and all i heard around me was a chorus of voices saying "Unexpected Item in Your Basket." I always wondered what would this item be? Never happened to me!

Surely it's not the first time you have heard it.

The computer knows the approximate weight of items you have scanned, and if the bag weighs more than that it tells you there is an unexpected item there.

I always use the self-scan. The other day I went to Sainsbury's and bought a load of wine in case it went up in the budget. For anybody not familiar with the self-scan tills, if you have certain items in your trolley they need to be checked; in this case the wine; I knew I would have to prove I was old enough to buy it. As the lady came to check my trolley I jokingly said I would need to show her my driving licence to prove I was old enough (I'm 77). She looked at the contents and then just looked at me with a smile. I asked her if there was a problem, "No, I'm just waiting to see your driving licence" with a big smile on her face. Once I showed it to her she cleared my purchases. Nice to have service with a smile.

I can sympathise with barry being frightened of being arrested for shoplifting. One one occasion we "stole" a bolle of Pear's liquid soap; we spent some time debating whether to try it and, eventually, put it in the basket without scanning it. Fortunately we weren't checked that day or it could have been embarrassing. Now, if I se my wife put something in the trolley without scanning it I ask her if we're stealing it or is she going to scan it.
