Dental Implants

A friend of mine (knowing that I got the implants) has emailed me to tell me she is going to Budapest to get two implants there (she has been to a dentist in Belfast and he has recommended this.

It would have cost £8,000 here but she will be getting done in Budapest of $6,565 - her sister is getting 6 done (I don't know for how much).

They will stay and get a wee holiday there (which they have to pay for flights and hotels etc).

Is she doing the right thing. I didn't want to say too much cos I didn't want to put her off.

I had some trouble with my implants here in Belfast that after about 3 months in - they were hurting me and I screamed at the dentist to take them out completely which he didn't of course.

Anybody advise of going abroad to get these done Thanks

Also she has said if when she comes back and there is any trouble - she can go to Wexford to get them seen too.

Her dentist has recommended the company so it should be okay but I would never travel abroad for surgery or dental work

to tell you the truth - I will tell her when next in contact - I really don't know why the whole heap can't be done in Wexford when they're ones to fix any problems she may have.

Because if there were problems who would sort it out?
If I'm not feeling comfortable in myself I prefer to be at home. I wouldn't enjoy travelling home a week or two after the procedure, I believe it can be painful.
Also, if it got to the stage where I wanted to sue I know nothing of Hungarian law and would not be able to pursue it in the UK.

I'm not the best person to give an opinion, really - I simply would never have implants even if they were free.

I am like yourself Barry - I do know of a few people who have got the implants locally - they would blind you at the whiteness of them - far too white. I have warned the friend of this.

It also took 6 months get completion - think I started in October then completed the following April - what a very long 6 months.

You need a crystal ball.
If there are no problems after they've been fitted, then it's worth it as she'll save herself some dosh.
If however, there are problems .... who will sort it out?? You say that someone in Wexford will sort it out?? I'm assuming she'll have to pay for that, whereas if you go back to the original dentist, it will (hopefully) be done flor free as it's their responsibility.
Personally, I wouldn't do it as the risks involved far outweigh the potential gains ..... just my personal opinion though.

what barry says. She'd usually need at least one checkup a few months later just to see if it's all gone well. Even if it has, that's an extra trip. Or she could just cross her fingers and hope she's okay. But I wouldn't do it abroad.

On the plus side, Budapest is very nice.

I would be wary, only because aftercare may be needed, and that's always better from the original surgeon.

I knew someone in France who took a 2 week 'holiday' in Budapest regarding his teeth. 10 years later he was still very satisfied with the result.

My opinion on this comes somewhat from personal experience.Now I know very little about the whole dental implant procedure,but having had complications from a recent dental procedure,I can say categorically,that the last thing I wold have wanted to do days after having had an invasive dental procedure,is have to haul myself to an airport get on a plane and fly.As far as I am aware even without complications,the implant procedure can be very painful without the flight on top of that

Add to this,if for some reason any revisions of the implant can’t be done in the U.K,then that means another flight while feeling like your jaw is going to fall off and/or on fire/being stabbed etc.I wouldn’t say going abroad for surgery is good or bad,but I would say seriously consider,whether potential extra money and severe pain in the long run,is worth saving money in the short term

Be wary, if anything goes wrong she will need to pay here to sort it out, I work in a dental hospital and we wont touch/repair anything done elsewhere, especially in another country.
