Why are they mad at the King? He doesn't run the country.

He's the figurehead. He's the obvious one who's in charge of it all. Who else could the people protest to?

I know people there.  The situation is dire - and that's putting it mildly.  They could probably have done without visits from royalty and dignitaries however well-meaning.  But if he hadn't gone he'd probably have been accused of not caring.  Kings and queens can't win sometimes - whatever they do.

It's an historical failure. In many places Spain's infrastucture is woefully inadequate to cope with unusual events affecting over-populated areas.

I was caught in a flash flood in the Malaga region some years ago, the day we were due to fly home.  The roads were closed due to landslides, the dry riverbeds became torrents that flooded.  I don't think anyone died in that flood but it was pretty scary.  Took a couple of weeks to clean up.  

Spain just isn't geared for rain, even in light rain the pavements become dangerously slippery.

i just ask because khandro has expressed admiration for dictatorships before (he loves tito and lee kwan yew if memory serves) so i was wondering if franco makes the cut
