Not having a big ego, or making demands is not necessarily bad.
I worked abroad for a few summers and it was the best thing to do to build confidence, and find out who you are. Not having your familiar environment around you automatically boosts your confidence, as does meeting new people. The new people you meet will not know that you are usually shy, so it's a good start to beginning not to be, and you will probably find you don't want to be either! Often when you are in a routine you may not feel able to change - going away for a while people may expect you to change to a degree.
Try travelling, or a summer abroad, it worked for me! And you could come away with some great new friends too!
And remember you are a good looking guy, who sounds like a nice guy too, they can be rare (ha ha) so be confident about that!!
Hope this helps x
