Help!!!

Theres this film i saw about 5 years ago on telly and i cant remember what it was. This is a bit vague but i think if you have seen it you will know, all i remember was a man who's an artist, but i think was scared buy a another man when he was a boy. I remember the man coming back (he was old and homeless i think) to the young mans appartment, the young man not knowing who he was untill he went with him on a train, the old man got mugged and killed. The young man saw his briefcase/notepad which from that he knew it was that man who scared him as a boy. Thats it, thats all i know. Maybe it was the same film with a big house, a garden and a girl in who he is standing on a beach looking out at the sea with in the end (the girl now obviously as a woman) also but that could be another film i cant remember!

Sounds like the remake of 'Great Expectations' to me, which starred Ethan Hawke, Robert De Niro and Gwyneth Paltrow.
