We are looking at getting a registration plate with a rugby crest on for my father-in-laws car for his birthday, however, when i mentioned this to my friend, she told me i may have to have all of his car details and paperwork to be able to buy it, does anyone know any more details on thiss matter, as it is only a new plate that we want, not a new reg number.

you wont be able to buy it as you need the log book of the car and some id of him,as shops are by law not allowed to seel no plates without this,its to stop cars being stolen and ringed.

So is there no way at all to do it without telling him about it first, or stealing his identity for a day??

cant you get his wife or member of the family to go with you to get it,because if you turn up with someones id etc,they might think its suspicious

I could get my fiance with his photo ID and his dads ID and the car documents, at least this way the surnames are the same and we have some evidence that they are related, would this work do you think?

Is it not illegal to have a registration plate with a crest upon it, other than as a nationality identifier?

When you click order plates go to show plates. Legal loop hole, no ID required as they are "show plates" . You will then find rugby motifs you can add on the side.

but your father in law would still risk prosecution and failing the MOT. The police have been warning for some time that the law on registration plates is being enforced more strictly because of cameras. The rugby badge might not affect the camera, but it is part of the same set of regulations.

regardingthe MOT, well you will still have the originals so just swap them on the day (2 minutes?).

Unless your number plate is incredibly unconforming with itallics and different sizes etc I can assure you there is not a cop in the country who will pull you over for having a rugby motif.

Even if they do (which they won't) but hyperthetically speaking, all that will happen is you get a VDRS (Vehicle Defect Retification) all you will have to do is swap them back and take the MOT to the cops. Simple.

technically yes illegal insofaras they fail to conform. Alas in the day and age when CPS are cash strapped and useless, where rapists might get a caution and burglars get three strikes, do you think it will be in the public interest to prosecute for having a rugby motif on your index plate?

I do not think this and the mud example are comparable since the excuse given is plainly nonsensical.

A point to also note, although this tends to relate more to the stupid italic plates and people spacing the numbers out is that the DVLA can confiscate your plates if they are displayed illegally - check with them to see if the rugby crest would be constituted as illegal for road use

To be honest as long as the letters are of the standard colour and size they won't do much. I had an illegal plate on my motorcycle for years a copper mentioned it once but didn't actually do anything about it.

As others have said there are plenty of places on the next which sell "show" plates where you don't need to provide any documentation.

Within this thread three of the options open to the police in dealing with this matter have been mentioned, namely...

♦ To administer a verbal warning.
♦ To implement the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme.
♦ To report the offender for process.

but there is a fourth option available...

♦ To issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.
