I've just made the rookie mistake of getting my new sleeping bag out of the bag it comes in to check it. Now its about three sizes too big for the bag and it won't go back in!

Any tips re-packing it would be greatly appreciated.

you need at least 2 people to do this and it will never be the same as when you brought it, the secret is:-

try, try and try again!

good luck

put it into a black bag and then hold the end around the hoover pipe.
When its shrunk down to the size of a potatoe its easy!!!

This is also a great way to store spare Duvet's/Towels, when its shrunk just wrap packing tape around the outside to keep it small.

If it's a synthetic filled sleeping bag, like hollofil, here's how: Best position is on your knees with stuff bag between your knees. Start with a corner, any corner, of the sleeping bag and stuff it down into the bottom of the stuff bag. Then, just keep stuffing sleeping bag into stuff bag. It'll go, but don't try to fold it into any kind of shape to try to get it back into stuff... just won't work.

If it is a mummy bag, I'd try to get it roughly into a rectangle first - 1 fold left and 1 fold right, then I've got the darn things to go back in by starting at the foot, begin to fill the sack and using a twist and fold movement, you literally stuff the sack.

The fibres can be really squeezed flat - I think the factories do use a vacuum to reduce the size for handling, but the bag will 'loft' again when you take it out so you aren't harming it by squeezing it a lot.

It alwalys looks like the bag will never make it into the stuffsack, but you just have to keep pushing...

it's not a rookie mistake - far better find out now than when you're in a corner of a field in the rain, the tent's leaking and you have to be off the site in 5 minutes.
