I'm off to a wedding next weekend and have bought myself a lovely mid-calf length red linen dress with matching jacket. However after going to the hen night at the weekend and everyone else was talking about what they are wearing to the wedding it sounds as though the dress I'm wearing will appear too formal. One teenager is wearing those city shorts, and even the sisters of the groom (they are my age - 40's) are wearing skirts and tops, one of them got her top from New Look and her skirt from Dorothy Perkins) and another woman is wearing a strapless dress. Should I wear the dress I've bought? (If I don't it won't be wasted as I'm going to another couple of weddings this year) or stick on a summery dress I've got hanging in my wardrobe which I bought for a party last year?

I would stick to what you've bought spud. Not only does a red linen outfit sound lovely, you can take the jacket off in the evening, which will make it look less formal.

Have a great time!

P.S. If you live nearby & feel the need, you could always sneak home later, to change into something else for the knees up! ;o}
Wear what you'd feel most comfortable in...
Your outfit sounds lovely - don't be tempted to dress down like the others! I think it's important to be elegant at a wedding. :)
I agree with tingirl dress up it's a special occasion and when the wedding photos come out you'll see you've done the right thing. enjoy
