how does one stop a dog barking?

my neighbour's dog constantly barks from dawn til dusk everyday. it has a shed outside and stands at the gate in snow even not seeming bothered about getting wet. how does my neighbour get it to stop barking? i dont want to fall out with them but its now getting beyond a joke and i keep trying to drop friendly hints!

A 12 Gauge side by side should do the trick.Then youre neighbour will be round asking for a jet washer to remove the stains from the patio

Or alternatively suggest that them owning a dog isnt suitable as far as there lifestyle goes.The dog is barking through boredom,and it is there responsibilty,and not the dogs fault.Environmental Health is your first port of call.

Our shar pei when young never stopped barking if we left him even if it was for 4-5 hours, we sent him to boot camp i.e. residential training apparently he barked for 2 weeks solid and then it began to dawn on him it wasnt going to work ! he was there for obedience training too and they had him for 6 weeks, it cost approx �350 but money well spent , he never barked again when left.
We sent him to a place near Colchester and the trainers name was Mr Barker !!!!! [he couldnt see the joke at all].

The neighbour obviously has no interest in the dog or it wouldn't be left outside in all weathers.The poor thing is barking for attention .If they can't be bothered with it and leave it to bark all day I can hardly see them shelling out to have it trained.
Phone your council and ask to be put in touch with the Dog Warden. Explain the situation and they may be able to do something about it.

A cooked sausage crammed full of paracetamol usually does the trick ... not that I've ever used this ;-)

we have secretly contacted council , logged noise etc but you have to go to court and say you will stand there yourself to prosecute. also contacted rspca when dog was standing at gate barking in heavy snow. cos there was shelter, the warden just said that you can only lead your horse to water ....... . we are getting to the end of our tether with it, hes a lovely dog , we just dont know what to do cos of not wanting to fall out with neighbours. once said about stopping barking but she said he was a good guard dog! if you train a dog not to bark, will it still bark at intruders or do you actually break the dog as such?

I could understand if this was something like an industrial premises where dogs are on guard ..but this appears to be a normal residence.I have a dog and he barks....when someone comes to the door or he hears something that's not the norm.Failing that he is as good as gold and you never hear him.
I would have a word with your neighbours and tell them quite frankly that it is not on and that some form of training should be looked at.
It is quite obvious the dog is barking for attention.
A proper guard dog will only bark if someone is about.
This sounds to me as if they just have the dog to prove a point.
You either have a dog as a pet or as a working dog....they seem to have their priorities muddled.
I do feel sorry for you and the poor dog....we have this problem with people who live at the back of us....you can keep on telling them but it doesn't sink in.
The dogs are well fed and watered but are never taken out for a walk or given any attention (apart from some ape yelling ..Shut up ) and are left to bark night and day.
I really do wish they would bring back the dog licence ..at a high price too...this would make people think twice.

Sadly, I can't offer you an answer, only sympathy. We have someone just like shaneystar2 describes next door to us. Dogs howling, whining and barking pretty much all the time they are there. They're just locked in a little cage at the bottom of the garden, or in his works van - totally ignored by him. Why does he have them?

Not the dogs' fault - they have a really miserable life - the ******** owners need training.

Good idea about dog licencing - perhaps a short course and and exam before you can have the licence?

If they are out all the time, they might not even know their dogs is barking all day. As far as I know, my dogs are fairly quiet during the day, but that's only because nobody has told me otherwise. I would hate it if my neighbours started taking matters into their own hands without giving me a chance to sort it out first.

I wish there were an answer here, as we have a neighbour with three dogs, who start thier yapping at 7 am and are still going on at 10.30pm.
It drives us crazy. there is little regard from the owner for people around here, as she yells rather loudly at them to shut up all the time, she can be heard yelling from 7 am too.
Lots of us around here have kids, and we jsut dont want to listen to her shouting and the dogs barking all the time.

I wish I could offer some sort of answer to help, but I'm stuck in the same situation, 3 Border collie sheep dogs kept in a 8ft x 6ft Pen, 2 of them seem docile enough but the other is a snarling beast and i have no doubt it would inflict a sore bite if given the chance... the pen has been constructed no more than 3 ft from my driveway and I have to walk past it every day if I have to go out to the garage, Barking, whining, howling and snarling through the fence at me has become the norm if I go anywhere outside the backdoor of the house, in fact I only have to turn the handle of the backdoor to start the barking off.... Now the owner only has to shout at them and they stop, all good you'd think, but sadly he is never there the majority of the time and we have to suffer the noise... Again I'm a dog lover and I would be more concerned if the dogs never barked but there is a distinct difference between a dogs friendly 'look at me' bark compared to the' come any closer and you get it' bark from a stressed and bored neglected animal... What is the answer here... How do you approach this... If the neighbour has control over the dogs when he's there, and never see's them when they are howling snarling beasts....

This might work, not sure though! What about a rape alarm? A short burst to shut the dog up (hopefully) then say good boy! (when the dog is quiet) After a few times the dog or dogs may get the message.

Anything that is louder than the dog might work, if you can stand it for a couple of days. (That is why the residential training worked - the other dogs were probably louder than the dog! A stay in kennels probably would have had the same effect and would have been far cheaper!)

Another idea, especially in this hot weather would be a water pistol. Most dogs do not like getting wet! it would not hurt the dog either.

If you can find something the dog does not like the sound of that might help, not always obvious things (I had a GSD, a big bossy girl that was terrified of squeaky toys and would go to her bed the instant one squeaked!).

The poor dog is barking for a reason! He is borde! I would be too! I suggest animal control. Give them a call. Explain you neighbor is not properly taking care of they dog. The only way is to give the poor dog a better life, not tied up 24/7.
And I think that the 12 gauge response, along with the sausage one is very inapropriate!! Even if a joke. Grow up.

danepie ..if you had read the previous posts carefully you will see that bubbles has already been down the Environmental Health route. We do not have "animal control" whatever that is in this country ..we have dog wardens and bubbles does not have a dog warden in her area.The RSPCA have been no help to her either.
If the dog has food and shelter then it is being looked after..it's the barking that's the problem.
Of course the dog is barking through boredom..but it's not easy when you have to live cheek by jowl with people and risk ill feeling and upset with neighbours.
