dell cd drive wont work

we bought a new dell computer a couple of months ago, and while trying to install some new software tonight i have found that the cd/dvd drive wont work. the disc goes in and nothing happens.
has anyone else had this problem and could you sort it yourself without resorting to the dell helpline?

Firstly, have you tried a different cd?

i have, had music and dvd's in there. zip, nada, bubkiss.

not trying to say youre an idiot here, but have you gone to my computer and open the drive from there. ?( with the disc in of course)

first thing i did peanut.
the discs dont even seem to be engaging, the drive doesnt wirr or anything.
i need this for work, dell had better have a little man round in a van with a couple of scredrivers to sort this out or there will be trouble!!

They are generally goo for that. They will probably send you a new one after some simple troubleshooting over the phone. Its also possible that one of those crappy flat cables has gone bad.

ok. i had this problem a few months ago with my dell cd drive. go to device manager and check that you dont have an " explaination mark " beside it. i think the message i got was that my cd drive could not be detected. i will come back with the solution as i cant remember off hand what it was.

back again ! i have searched for that solution and i cant find it. it was a download from the internet and it solved the problem right away. you could try a system restore but i dont think that worked when i tried. i will keep looking and post it if i find it.

been on to dell this morning. the guy on the fone had me trying everything, and to be fair to him he was really good.
they are shipping me out a new drive 2day, which wiil be here first thing in the morning.
