New Years resolution suggestion for some
11 Answers
I am still relatively a new member and I would not dream of trying to suggest rules to adhere to, BUT I do feel as a new year's resolution that some people who continually complain about other members spelling try hard to find a little more patience with members here who are not as clever as they feel themselves to be. Some people simply cannot spell, some are dyslexic, some spell phonetically and some (like our American cousins) drop the U and therefore spell differently. Some have macular degeneration and cannot see well and do not touch type, some perhaps did not have great education but few of these bad spellers who contribute here are actually unintelligent. Often these people take time to make a post bringing something to our attention often they join in with an answer and share their point of view and often they contribute a very worthwhile comment. Why should we damn them and feel superior simply because their spelling is not as good as we feel ours may happen to be? They post from the heart because they can reflect humanity and passion because they type as quickly as they can record their thoughts and not give a distant anesthetised post by delaying and rephrasing and spell checking before submitting their views.

The correctors who post a correction do not make me feel that they are clever or superior or endear me to them and their code of conduct to what is acceptable for other members to read on AB makes me feel that their talents would be better suited on a more intimate forum and not one which encompasses every normal human being with their individual faults and weaknesses. If the Ed does not edit an individuals post for spelling and moderators do not either then why do some fellow members feel that their aim in life is to put the poster and all readers wise to typos? So perhaps it would be nice if the constant few moaners made a New Years resolution to find patience and understanding with all fellow AB contributors here who are not as clever with the English language as they see themselves to be? We cant all be perfect so give some people a break would you because those who constantly correct are terrible bores
and lastly - I far sooner read a persons post including typos that was written with passion than waste my time reading a posters post solely regarding corrections of the originators spelling mistakes. They have everything to give and share and the ones who feel the need to bring to the attention of members to the originators spelling mistakes simply have nothing worthwhile to contribute.....so please all you very clever highly intelligent members that feel the need to correct others, call a blo**y truce for 2007 and allow us lesser mortals our weaknesses would you? We know a typo and ignore it and follow the post and i don't think many actually feel the need for a member to bring the matter to our attention. We did not so why should a few of you?
I know what you mean... I only mention spelling on two occasions: if the person making the post has done it to criticise other people's spelling himself;, or if it looks like the person might want to google a name but doesn't know how to spell it properly, in which case I think it's probably helpful to know exactly what to look for. Happy Christmas.

jno - stop nicking my bloody answers! :-)
There is a certain satisfaction in pointing out an error made by some sanctimonious pillock who has taken it on themselves to correct others - may we at least be allowed that pleasure? ;-) There is one semi-regular poster on AB who seems to contribute nothing other than spelling corrections. This leads to mischievous pixies like jno and myself just waiting for him to slip up so we can give him a taste of his own medicine.
I completely agree with your view for people who make the occasional typo (as I do myself) or have made a genuine attempt at spelling a certain word, but I find it far more difficult to be patient with people who insist on using deliberately lazy "text speak" that makes messages difficult to read and their posters look like idiots. When I see a question like "wot do u fink iz lyk da best rekrd eva? i fink its got 2 b uptown grl by westlife coz dey iz so kool innit", it is very tempting to ask them to repost it in English.
Actually, if they think Uptown Girl by Westlife is "da best rekrd eva" it's more tempting to have them put down, but you get my drift.

zimzam - some of the most intelligent and best educated people I have known in my long life - were some of the worst spellers:) Unless you are trying to help someone find something that doesn't show up anywhere - mentioning spelling is rude - I sincerely hope I have never had a brain dead moment and done it myself!!! If you find me doing so, please bring it to my attention - I will apologize for it immediately!!!
