Hi everyone.

My husband is going to be putting up some floating shelves in the new year in the living room alcove. He wants to put the TV on it (weight 14kg) Is this a good idea? Should the floating shelves have any sort of special support for a TV?
Thanks very much.

I don't know what a floating shelf is but I would assume you mean the sort which don't have brackets. Personally I wouldn't risk it - I thought they were more for decorative use than practical use.

Yes postdog they are the ones without brackets. My husband seems hell bent on doing it -- oh well goodbuy brand new Samsung TV - boo hoo!!
should be ok if he uses expanding bolts and its a good shelf. put a weight on it which is heavier.

Depends on fixings. Is it a plasterboard wall of brick. Plasterboard maybe not so much of a good idea but brick should be fine. Use a 4" screw with brown or red plug shud be fine. Yes i agree put 16kg of weight on it for a couple of days before the tv and cdeck it hasn't move.

Thanks Viking and Toleman

I will show this to my husband when he's home. Good idea about putting a weight on it (rather than waiting for the TV to come crashing down).

Brilliant thanks.

Thanks for all your advice. After having a look the husband decided it was too much hard work and has now bought a nice unit thingy from Ikea (self assembled very well I might add!).

So whoopee no chance of TV crashing to the ground.
