Should the government take action to make the "Traveling Community," stand on their own two feet, instead of sponging off the rest of us? Go on - Get angry!

something should be done though, a lady who i worked with had to push something infront of her door every night when they were in a field next to her house, because they tried to get in, and stole the kids bikes which is disgusting behaviour.. and i dont think the police did anything to stop them which is worse. they shouldnt be allowed to just camp up and do things like this, but fair enough if they travel and dont cause any harm at all then thats fine.
but it's the ones who do damage and steal that should be stopped.

It gets me angry that people think gypsies are filthy tramps and thieves. I am of gypsy descent and none of my family are without jobs, none of them are travellers anymore, that died out a couple of generations ago. However, I know lots of gypsies who still live in caravans, now most are builders, roofers, one is a millionaire and one is a drug dealer, some of them are a bit rough, one has been to prison for murder, all of there wives stay at home and look after the home and children, all are polite friendly and would help you any way you can. They are no different to any other walk of life, some good some bad.
Majoratively people want to work and do the best for themselves..

Theland, damned right I'm angry to hear more of the same ignorant, ill informed stereotypical nonsense spouted by someone who comes on hear spouting about his loving religion then refers to his fellow men as "things".
I have a huge amount to do with the legitimate travelling community ( they winter on my land every year) and I have traded with them for years. They are no better or worse than anyone else and deserve to be treated with the same respect you'd give anyone else and not designated a bad lot because you've had negative experiences with some of them. That's as stupid as me saying anyone with blue eyes is violent because my father had blues eyes. Learn to evaluate people as individuals and not be so bloody rude.

my friend is a gypsy and i have grown up with him
i think nowadays people mistake the real romany gypsy with a non-romany gypsy.
the gypsies you see living of the street who are dirty and theives i think yes there should be something done about them,
but i also no of my friends family who still live in a caravan but in one place on a campsite and are given a bad name by the "others"

I think individuals are perfectly entitled to adopt a travelling way of life, if they want to but they can't have their cake and eat it. If they still expect the benefits of living in a civilised society (education for their children, health care, state pension, etc) they must expect to work and pay taxes like the rest of us. I see no reason why they should be allowed to invade other peoples' property, defile it and leave it looking a total mess and leave other taxpayers to foot the bill.
Where I live, we have the biggest Travellers camp in Britain, and I think, Europe.
When they first moved in, the amount of trouble they caused was unbelievable, caused i believe, in part, due to residents attitudes, but over time, most have settled into the community, the kids go to school, and now there;s no trouble whatsoever.
So I guess its all about giving people a chance.
