Mayonnaise in sandwiches

The vast majority of sandwiches sold in this country (i.e. the pre-packaged sort) from Tesco, Asda, etc. are absolutely caked in mayonnaise. To my knowledge mayonnaise has never been a traditional sandwich filling, so I assume that the reasoning behind it is that pound for pound it is cheaper than butter/spread, plus it fills out the sandwich?

Have I answered my own question, or does anyone know different?

You probably have answered it yeah, just like to add however that I hate mayo so I really struggle to buy a prepacked butty in a shop :-(

I can't stand the stuff either so it's really hard to find a sandwich that I can actually buy. I have found only tesco and M&S that actually do sandwiches without mayo

Have been in Tescos today and noticed that they had 'Just Ham' and 'Just Chicken' sandwiches, no mayo. Personally it depends on what I'm having on my sandwich, but if it is something that is a little 'dry' then I quite like a little mayo.

I quite like mayo but not half an inch of it !!! The only veggie sandwiches I can get at Tesco's are:-

egg mayo on oatmeal bread - seriously soggy bread too :(
cheese and tomato on white pap with said half inch thick of mayo
just cheese on wholemeal - which is ok ....

Asda do a nice egg salad sarnie but they put cream in it !!!! (now, I cannot understand cream being even wanted in a sandwich) or egg & cress with loads of mayo on oatmeal bread (once again, a soggy mess).

Greggs do an egg mayo on either white or wholemeal bread but since I usually find a bit of eggshell in there too, it's a bit offputting.... The only cheese sarnie they do comes smothered in branston which to me is worse than the mayo, doh !

In answer to your question Andy, I don't know why these sarnie makers insist on putting in huge quantities of mayo, I can't see that it's cheaper than a little marg, so I can only assume that they think the customer likes it that way !

Our local sarnie shops tend to put half an inch of marg on their butties, so I end up making my own .....

I think it came from America somehow...

All those old films and TV shows all had the line " hold the Mayo " in the scenes in the Sandwich bars etc.

I would say that it is also to "bind" the contents together. Personally I love it and started adding it to sandwiches to keep the insides together and stop them falling out!

Boots sandwiches can come without mayo, they have a little circle with 'no mayo' written in it. Thought it might be helpful!

i actualy prefur mayonaise to butter. but no doubt is because mayonaise is cheaper not just because they want to please me.
