random man begging at my front door

This afternoon, a middle aged man rang my door bell, then immediatly started knocking until I answered. When I did, he made the 'shush' sign and then held up a card that said, along the lines of, 'I am deaf. I am also Polish and very poor, would you look at some of my daughters drawings and consider donating some money?'

Has anybody else experienced anything like this?? I am completely baffled by it - I live in a nice enough area, and have never heard of this happen to anyone else. I'm not against people begging, I often buy the big issue and have several direct debits set up for charities, but is going to someone's front door to beg not crossing a line?! It just seemed pretty bizarre!

About 2 years ago I had a young girl knock at my door and handed me a card which said she was a student, that she didn't speak english and that she was selling some art work. I just smiled and said no thank you and off she went next door.

Bit rude of him to tell you to shush then hand you a card asking to donate some money to him!! lol

I think it is actually illegal to beg, if he was not selling you anything then he was begging, he probably was waiting for his next benefit payment and needed some quick cash to do his weekly shop in waitrose.

similar experience a few weeks ago, a young male holding a plastic carrier bag, produced a small hand written card saying he was a student and didnt speak english, i read the first few lines and said sorry ,,,, no glasses on.

At least he knocked! Give it a while and with the systematic distruction of law and order in the country, they'll just break in and rob you!

It's weird, I'm not even sure if it annoyed me - I just thought it was so strange he was going door to door. I thought it might even be illegal, but couldn't see how! It's just frustrating - he was more than likely trying to scam me, but I still have that horrid guilt I get when I say no to charitable causes!!

yep, I had one of them about a month ago, basically told him in Polish, to go p*** o** b**** to poland.

am 3rd generation english/polish and the latest influx of scroungers makes me sick.,

Have seen it in pubs twice a few years ago the last time. Both times the guy would put a series of cards on the table in front of us saying he was a deaf mute (nothing about being foreign) and would we be interested in buying a lighter. He would then put a collection of lighters on the table and leave us for a couple of minutes to peruse the lighters. Never bought any though.

kujawski you should know better. Polish immigrants come here to make money for a better life for themselves and their families back in Poland. There are some really exellent universities back home so a lot of immigrants are highly skilled and its tough for the younger ones having to suck up to the older generation. Would you tell me to go back to Poland like that?

Its my point of view,hold on, so what your saying Begging is OK,
as they are trying for a better life from what begging????
i have no problem with the honest worker who comes over ,
just these users,
and i know there are load of them, trying anything on.

as for the universities, i dont know, have a cousin who has done a 'degree' in computer science, .... could'nt work out how to connect a printer,

another cousin training to be a doctor , doesnt know what the word word actually means
