An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very special."

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," the jeweler said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by check. " I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account."

"I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had!?"

Ah, someone else who watches Countdown.
Des told it very well.
i liked it !!! some people always have to complain dont they
I wasn't complaining, redhead. I was merely pointing out that Des O'Connor had read it out a couple of days before on Countdown.
So much better to have something new or even an old one which most people had forgotten.
The one thing he missed out was that in the joke read out by Des it was a blonde.
But I suppose it could quite easily have been a redhead!
I bet Des Lynham would have told it even better.
Very good Avatar ----- that's an even better joke! Des Lynam was a disater
Very good, Avatar, -- that's an even better joke.
Des Lynam was a disaster!
Even though he was being a ridiculous 600,000 a year he found the journey to Leeds to record a week's programmes too difficult and resigned or was he pushed?

I know this is wandering off the topic a bit but it's now being said that the reason given for Des Lynam leaving Countdown was just the 'official line'. The truth is allegedly that he was bored with the job, he just didn't have enough to do.
To be bored with a job paying 600,000 a year must be a problem! A problem which many, many people would be very happy to have. I believe that viewing figures went down appreciably during his reign. Des O'Connor will evenually get them back but it wll take some time.
I still suspect that Lynam wasgiven the boot.

Where's Des Lynam now then? Can he come back from this?
Who Cares?
