Are we talking about phrases that are different between American English and British English? I'm American... but we would also say "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" because that is the proper name, we all know it to be British, and we know what a wardrobe is! On the other hand, we'd say "Watch your step" instead of "Mind the gap"... and the movie that is titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in the UK is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" over here. Did the miss the point of your question? Maybe you were talking about something else, otherwise you would have put your question in the Phrases & Sayings category. Hmmm....

Don't know why Whistler's Mom is there - it was painted by an American, so why should it need another American title? Besides, the real title of the work is "Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the artist's mother". Funny you should mention Brighton Rock. Critic John Sutherland reports the sighting of a French edition of the book that translates the title as Les Rochers de Brighton complete with picture of a mountain.
