Hi I am buying my first car and just wondered if anyone had any tips on buying a used car.. ie what should I look out for. Is there a rule of thumb on how much discount you can get of the asking price. Is it best to buy privately if possible. Many thanks

Have a look on here http://www.autotrader.co.uk
take someone with you that knows a bit about cars.
Check out www.parkers.co.uk for used prices and technical data on cars. Private is best but i know some people who have got good cars from traders. You can potentially get up to 500 off the asking price. Always check the paperwork - service history, MOT, etc. and that the mileage corresponds to it. Look at the 'additional notes' on the MOT and service invoices, these tell you what might need replacing soon. Also ask whether the cam belt has been replaced and if not check with the company who make the car at what mileage it would need replacing.
