Internal examination to confirm a pregnancy?
Hi,
Can anyone help. My brother in laws girlfriend is causing lots of problems at the moment. To cut along story short she had an abortion 8 weeks ago (19 weeks pg!) and is saying she is pg again! She has done 3 or 4 tests all coming up negative but still insists she is pg. She has told bro in law she went to the doctors and he did an internal examination and confirmed her pg?? Is there such a thing or is this another one of her big fat lies??

I would have thought that the doctor would have taken a urine sample & sent it for testing or possibly sent her for an early scan to check for heartbeat. I would have thought it unlikely that an internal exam could confirm preg, especially at such an early stage. Sometimes an early scan is performed internally but at 8 weeks it could be done externally.
I'm not a medical expert but I am preg & haven't had any internal exams all throughout my preg.
If she is preg then the GP should refer her to a midwife for a booking-in appt where she will be given her maternity notes, you could leave it for a couple of weeks and then ask to see her notes.
I hope both you and she are ok.
Good luck

Helow,
I had an internal exam when I was bout 5wks.
What they look for is a softening right at the top of where their fingers reach. This confirms that 'something' is happening!! I also had a urine and blood test for my HCG levels.
When I was 7wks I had an external scan done and could see the heart beating!!
Am now 12wks!! Woohoo!!
But, to my knowledge no one can confirm with an internal exam that you're preggie!!
But, you can always have a false negative and never a false positive test!!
