Catch me if you can...

Well I had fun & games last night. Something woke me out of my sleep around 1am, and as I was lying there thinking about whether or not somebody was actually outside & up to no good a car alarm suddenly went off. I bolted out of bed thinking that there might be a potential car thief, and looked outside to see my flatmate's car completely ablaze. I couldn't believe it! So I reacted quickly by calling the fire brigade and called for my flatmate (I suddenly had this horrible feeling that she might be in the car!, but she was in bed thank God). The fire brigade was there within 10 minutes so at least the car didn't explode a la movie styleee
However, the circumstances were all a bit suspicious, pointing at an arson attack. Straight away my flatmate thought of her ex-boyfriend. And I have to say that I know very little about the details of her ex, but I do know she has a restraining order out against him which he has already broken since we've been living under the same roof, so my gut feeling is saying that it's him too.
So what now? She's called the police but without any eye witnesses confirming the culprit they're likely to do very little about this. Do we have to wait for this nutter to burn down the flat with us 3 girls inside before the police will arrest him?

It was one person, because I woke up to the sound of somebody's footsteps walking on the gravel. I heard some noise and it made me aware that somebody was out there. That's why I reacted so quickly once an alarm kicked in. I thought I'd catch somebody in the act.
We do have some kids in our area who loiter outside the local shop etc. But they're fine. Aside from hassling the shopkeeper they're actually very polite.
I'm going to leaflet drop the neighbourhood later to see if anyone saw anything.

Here's a tip, if you have a letterbox, nail it up and put one outside on the wall. (you can get them from hardware shops, Focus). We did that years ago when I taught martial arts and all sorts of weirdos put things in my letter box. It's easy to do and stops anyone putting things through your door. It's a start at least. Without any witnesses its easy to put blame even tho you think it was probably him, it might not be! Can you set up a video in the window discreetly at all? worth it if you can.
I would invest in a baseball bat and a fire extinguisher.
Can you set up a camcorder at your window at night that will film throughout. One that can plug into the mains. You can then watch it back the next day and then record over it the following night, and so on. You never no what it you might record.
