Would someone be able to tell me if years ago.....(like a million...lol) Our mate told us that horses use to have toes instead of hooves.!!!!..is this in fact true or has he just watch to many animal planet programmes.

Yes it is. Horses today still have remnant bones in their legs from when they did have 5 toes. The chestnuts, on the insides of the legs, are thought to be remnant pads from the first digits.
