Carrots

Yesterday in Tesco, I saw 'unwashed carrots'. Can anyone tell me what is the point of these? They were approximately twice the price of normal carrots. I can only assume that once you got these home you would wash them under clean water which is what I imagine that the farmer does before they send normal carrots to Tesco.

Is this another rip-off disguised under the banner of organic food?

I agree with you that organic produce should never be sold at the price it is, but you have to remember that the growers probably lose a lot. To be honest, I'd rather pay a higher price though, to get fresh vegetables which haven't been sprayed with poisons. As for the dirt on those carrots - well, it doesn't take long to scrub them clean. I'd be wanting to wash the other sort even MORE thoroughly, in case any gross residues were left on them - but since you're being charged by the weight, it might be a good idea to complain. Pay for the carrots yes, but not the soil that goes with them.
I was brought up in the 50's before mass supermarket buying and all our produce was organic, that's just the way it was. You went to the greengrocers and bought whatever veg was in season (dirt and all) and it was reasonably priced, not the oiked-up prices they charge now for supposedly organic produce. The same went for all meat bought at the butchers. Also, our veg came in all shapes and sizes not like the uniform shapes they are today.
