Is this appropriate?

Hi,
I was recently employed on a two week placement for a job. I really enjoyed my time there and they were happy with my work there. I was interviewed twice for a permanent position in the two weeks as well. But there were other candidates being interviewed too and it was whittled down to two of us. Now the other candidate is temping there for this week and they will make their decision on Friday. I feel really helpless seeing that I already did my two weeks and two interviews and now it seems like it out of my hands and there's nothing I can do. I feel that although I had an extra week than the other candidate I am at a disadvantage because I went first.
I think that this is my ideal job, I can't see myself being half as enthusiastic about another position.
So, (after all my rambling!) my question is; should I contact the company? I feel that I need to let them know how much this means to me. Or is it completely inappropriate to contact them this week as well as being unfair on the other candidate. If you think it's okay to contact them, what should I say?
I'm sorry for going on and thanks to anyone who managed to sit through this long long message.

Write to the personnel department, or the head of the department that's advertising the job, and ask them to take into consideration your time there. Tell them what a great place it is to work for, and that you'd love to be given the opportunity to prove yourself, by hopefully being given a permanent position. If you don't make it, at least console yourself with the fact that you were in the running and managed to get to the last two. Best of luck.
