Phone companies in UK

What are the major phone companies in UK (land lines) ? I wanted to ring a relative in Reading in UK. I have their phone number but for the last two weeks it appears to be disconnected/faulty. I just rang the internation operator here in Australia who checked with the Bt operator, but as the phone is with someone other than BT they couldn't hep. I need to know who are the major phone companies so I can check for the phone number or check the line

Two of the biggest are NTL or Telewest(Cable and Wireless I think). Hope this helps Andy

Two weeks is a long time for it to be faulty. However I think the BT operator would know if it had been disconnected, because they run the telephone directory service. Maybe they have changed providers, got cut off, or cancelled the service. Call directory enquiries and ask for their number. If it is still listed then they still have a service. If all else fails, you could always write to your relatives and ask them to contact you. Or you could phone them ;-)

Sorry but I just realised that you could try the on-line directory enquiries at bt.com. (unless of course they are ex-directory)
