I am travelling around the world for a year but need to return to England for a wedding half way through (on the 8th Jan 2005). I will be in Sydney at the time. I was hoping to be able to turn up at the airport on the 2nd January and try and get on a cheap flight (a cancellation?) as I have a very tight budget (rather than book a flight now which will cost me in excess of 1,000). Am I being naive? I will have to do the same from England and try to just jump on a plane back but the time factor won't be so bad. HELP!!

Personally i think you will struggle - you have to remember that visiting Aus from Uk is very popular over Xmas and ususally costs a fortune: the flights are full. If you really have to pursue this then I suggest you get ready to camp out at Sydney airport for sometime - who knwos you might get lucky, but LUCK is what you are going to need.
People travelling from Oz to UK usually do so before Xmas, so you could be okay. I shall make a couple of calls and get back to you.
