Some facts taken from this link

The European Union is spending 30million a year to support Spanish bullfights, which this year will kill at least 40,000 bulls.

Given the 40,000 bulls die in Spanish bullfights every year, the total EU support package for bullfighting has so far amounted to more than 100million.

The Cortijo Wellington farm, which lies just outside Madrid, receives more than 120,000 per year in EU subsidies to breed fighting bulls for the ring. Still, for farmer Domingo Gonzales, the money 'is not enough'.

'I rear two-year-old bulls for the children in the local villages,' he says. 'In a few weeks there will be a special festival for the children. They will play and fight with the bulls. They chase them through the streets and pull their tails and ears. They finish by stabbing them with little swords and knives. Children like doing that.'

A favourite fiesta 'sport' involves hanging chickens upside down by their feet on washing lines. The townsfolk then ride underneath and pull their heads off to win prizes.

Another involves placing chickens in boxes with their heads poking out of the top. Local men and boys then try and chop as many heads off as possible while blindfolded.

Meanwhile, you and I need to remember that, through the EU, we are subsidising this so-called 'sport'

anotheoldgit --Did you leave an 'R' out or did I read it wrong in the first place ?

Leave a 'R' out?

Please explain?
Sick sick sick!

I saw that upside down chicken thing on secret filming programme some years ago. It was very distressing, I had to swith off. they also throw goats out of windows.
Basically after muslims, paedophiles and many an inhabitant of Cardiff and its environs, the greasy deigo Spainish scum are amongst the filthiest humans on Earth.

Why anybody in modern western culture gains pleasure from unnecessary animal cruelty is beyond my psychological understanding.

However, I do obtain a small degree of glee when matadors are stabbed by bull horns. I even smile when they are seriously hurt or the equally odious spectators are trampled upon. Even better when they die.

As for the EU, well Britain is no longer great is it?

Joining forces with peasant, communist nations and others who delight in animal torture is not exactly what generations of my paternal heritage fought for.

Death to Matadors and long may their families suffer!!!!
While I don't have any problem with bullfighting, I don't really see the point in subsidising it - after all, it's not exactly going to die out, is it?
Should the Tories win power at the next election , and lift the ban on fox hunting - I hope that there will be similiar indignation .
do the fox huters get subsidising from the EU
Not as far as I'm aware

What's your point ?
Fox Hunters are just as bad. I have lost many a friend who have continued with this odious "sport".

I hope ALL fox-hunters and especially the cherub like little Tarquins who have their angelic face smeared with their first kill, suffer eternal unhappiness and suffering.

Tally-ho my arse.

Animals are on earth to be supply us with food, warmth, companionship and aesthetic pleasure NOT to be killed, tortured and abused in the name of sport.
i class fox hunting / bull fighting as evil sports. i was just wondering why the spanish scum get money for the killing yet the british scum get nothing. a honest straight question berti.
What's your point ? ....................
Out of interest, why do you think animals have a specific purpose? Do they come with labels saying 'For use in the following circumstances:'?
Whether you follow a religious path or a completely scientific pathe, there is no question that Humans should dominate animals.

We are the king of the jungle and animals do have a specific purpose in our eco-cycle and food chain.

However we are gifted with reason and intelligence well beyond the realms of other animal kingdoms.

ergo, whilst we dominate animals, we should still be respectful and kind to their basic needs and well being.

Killing an animal (humanely) is natural.

Torturing and killing for mere pleasure is mediaeval and barbaric.

We have moved on. But unfortunately some folk haven't. And it appears the dirty Spainish are left in the dark ages.
well said abdul bet kromo says it is only a bull ?.............as in only a lamb...................?????????????????

Ah see where you are coming from now.

I did miss it out because the name was too long for answer bank. (12 letters max)

Wardy: Thanks for clarifying. I was genuinely asking out of curiosity. (For once I'm going to try and resist the temptation to derail a thread and keep my mouth shut)

Abdul, I agree whole heartedly with everything you've said.
I've always vowed not to visit Spain until they stop bull fighting.
Why should I spend my money in their country. To think that holiday-makers pay to see this and cheer makes me ill. The government seems to have spare cash to give to everybody except the pensioners who have worked hard all their lives and are now being paid a pittance!
