Supermarket and bar work is definitely out because of the licensing laws regarding alcohol. For this kind of work in Essex you have to be 21 although some supermarkets will recruit people at 18+.
Part time work in other areas is possible but, because of your age, you are restricted to a couple of hours a day. You also have to get permission from your school.

well you can work in a supermarket from 16 and in pub - just glass collecting but at 14 your not legal for those types of work

It really is about the only option at your age.

your seriously restricted on the hours your able to work at that age, you will require work permit from the local social security (the employer should sort that out) and the fact you are working and what you are doing and your normal hours will be reported to your School and if your School work suffers your employer will terminate your work.

Get an evening paper round if you don't like the idea of getting up early. look for the advert in your local evening paper.

I seem to recall that when my daughter was looking for a job during a school holiday period - the minimum age for most companies was 15.

Why on earth do you want to work at 14? You should be studying and stuff! I also think the only job you can get under 16 is paper rounds! By the way, if you went to North Dakota, USA you could drive at your age! If you were really desperate for a job though, never say it. You could get some rather inappropriate jobs for old men...

You can work but only approx 2 hours during the week and about 4 to 6 hours on a weekend. I believe you can work approximately a total of 10 hours a week. During school holidays you will be allowed to work on a full time basis.Try places like fast food restaurants who may need Saturday help. I would contact the local authority to see if they can give you the work permit paperwork that you need to get the employer to fill in. That takes the onus off the employer to have to get the paperwork. There are certain limitations to the type of work you can do, you cannot handle any dangerous equipment and the employer should complete a risk assesment to assess that the workplace is suitable for you to be in.
I have employed 14 year olds in the past in my Subway stores. I have found that although they naturally need more supervision, they were quick to learn and very reliable. One of my youngsters stayed with me on a part time basis until she left to go to university and I would always consider applications from young workers. Best of luck, have a chat with your school who may be able to advise you further and ensure that you know your rights, some employers will not hesitate to exploit young people!
