Suspicious message when shutting down computer

When I attempt to shut down my computer at the end of the day, I sometimes get a message saying "others are logged onto your computer .... are you sure you want to shut down?" My husband and I have networked computers but I get this even if his isn't powered on. Could someone else be logged on and monitoring my email or other activities?

Try starting the computer up, then shutting it down. Does it still do it then?
Windows can be set so as to switch users instead of logging off which makes sense with networked computers.

There is always a small chance that you are carrying a hacker so switch your modem off and then shut down. That way you can be sure it is not an outsider if it still does it.

If one of you is the administrator and are set to log on automatically this could also occur.

If none of these are related to your problem you'll be sure to get a proper answer when the techie brigade wakes up. lol

Do you have any mapped network drives? it might just be the drive map that's causing the message

Right click on my computer and select manage and then click on the + next to shared folders and select sessions and it will list the people connected to your computer.

could be shares - Mine rarely come up with that message (but I have seen it) - possibly after opening a file on another machine

big question is - have you got firewalls on the machines?

the router (I assume that's what you use) should have a built in firewall - and if not the dhcp is (mis) regarded as a firewall in it's own right.

this weekend there was a lot of port scanning and sniffing going on (ab chose to remove my post !!)

so It's possible - (but unless you or hubby work for MI5) - unlikely you are worth the effort.

you do need virus, malware and firewall running on all your machines - and I'm starting to think if you bank - it won't hurt to reboot before you start - and after you finish.

if you have all that in place - there isn't much else you can do.
