I beleive this is made with eggs and bread is dipped into it and fried in a pan (recipe is in Kramer vs Kramer.
My Brother In Law reckons French Toast is bread toasted on one side only.
Is my version an Americanism (if you can have an Americansim of something French) - I know that French fries refers to the WAY of cooking (ie thinly cut and deep fried) as opposed to chips. Any advice?

Best served with lashings of tomato ketchup.
I have also had French toast in a couple of restaurants - in different countries - and it is always served like this, so I think you are correct.
I'd just call your French toast eggy bread, and like your brother in law I'd say French toast is toast toasted on one side -- but then the bread side spread with lots of butter.
Eggy bread is good with a little Marmite -- I don't toast it first. Icing sugar though -- ugh! Not sure about marmalade -- I'll have to try that.
(Incidentally, I think Marmite and marmalade do go well on toast together)
All in all, it looks to me as if there is not one "correct" French toast.
"French Toast" at our farm in US is usually white bread dipped in egg mixture then fried in small amount of oil. Best recipe is:
2 Eggs (whole)whipped with 1/4 cup cream, 1 tabelspoon cornstarch, 2 tbsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon )ground).
Mix together, whipping until slightly bubbly. Slice French bread (we actualy prefer sour dough bread)about 1 inch thick. Heat 1 tbsp. oil in skillet (cast iron best). Dip bread, but not for long (shouldn't be soggy). Fry unitl brown on both sides. Then place on rack in 350 deg F. oven until tops turn bubbly. Serve with warm butter and warm real maple syrup. Also can accompany with warm molasses mixed with small amount of honey to sweeten. We enjoy a side of thick sliced bacon or country ham. Ummmmm!
