Just in case (!) we find ourselves in a bar where the rugby is on this afternoon, I want to sound clever.

This is what I know ...

Part of the reason England lost to S. Africa in last year's Final was not winning possession from line outs.

S. Africa have a good line out jumper called Victor Matfield.

This is what I've read ...

Since last year, the laws have changed, so that teams no longer have to have the same number of players in the line out. Tactically, this gives England more line out options on S. Africa's put in, and reduces Victor Matfield's advantage.

Guys ... help me to sound clever this afternoon ...

... does anyone understand why the new laws will hepl us?

Please ... no fake explanations that will make me look stupid.

gosh -this is where you are JJ
i dont know how it really is a big advantage as the better jumper(they are hoisted now anyhow) should get the ball especially on their own throw
ps-DO NOT shout --hand ball...........or mention the nice new style of rugby shirts

Aww, beejay, that's mean.

I'm not a total rugby airhead.

what a pleasure-a female who appreciates the oval ball game

I like lots of sports, beejay. I like to understand what's going on (and I like to sound like I know what I'm talking about).

Football is a very simple game. At The Seagulls, shouting "Come on, Brighton" at the tops of our voices seems to be sufficient.

Rugby is much more technical, and tactical. I like to understand why a particular side are (or aren't) getting good possession, and why referees make the decisions they do. Otherwise, the blokes just label you as "bottom watcher".

... which is only partly true

=0)
a few terms that might help
nail him--tackle him
go down the blind side--run down the side (of the scrum) that is nearest to the touch line(narrowest side)
feed him--pass the ball to a player on your own side who is in a more advantageous position
grubber kick it-- kick the ball at ground level between two of the opposition so as one(or more) of your players csn run on to it
fell that big c*unt--tackle that particularly large opposition
forward(usually reserved for props(no 1 or 3) or second row forwards(no 4 or 5) -who usually are 17 - 20 stone and 6ft- 6ft 6 tall
any more that spring to mind -i will be on to you
happy bot watching !

Just found some clever information for me to reel off this afternoon, beejay.

If England win against South Africa, England will get a good seeding for the draw for the 2011 World Cup ...

... UNLESS !!!!!

... Ireland beat Argentina.

So I'd like to say good luck to your boys this afternoon.

But only if England don't win. If England lose, Ireland are allowed to win. If England win, could you help us out in the World Cup draw and lose to Argentina, please?

My darling jogger, I have seen a different side to your character and I am suitably impressed. The line out....if you are doing badly in the line out, as England often do, then one can say, "let's give up and station our men out of the line out, to increase the number to defend." Now the problem we have had since the World Cup is lack of passion and commitment plus the obvious that our basic skills are just not good enough.South Africa will win by 25 points today and that is if Cipriani has his kicking boots on.......which he hadn't last week. Do you live in Brighton?

Hey, Sqad.

In my paper today (The Guardian) Phil Vickery says South Africa were "lucky" in the World Cup Final. I'm not sure. They looked very good through the whole tournament. But, he fancies England's chances today.

Thank you for your tips about tactical defending. I shall add your info to my arsenal of throwaway comments, ready to impress the guys in the bar. I shall be a star this afternoon. Yaaayyy!

Yes, I do live in Brighton ...

... into the centre of which I am now heading, in search of my friends, some lunch, and more Beaujolais Nouveau.

Catch you later, when we will hopefully be flush with victory and Beaujolais (unless we decide to go on to the Casino). If The Seagulls beat Huddersfied as well, it will be jolly down in the town later on.

Just read beejay's rugby terms - lol
Actually it's one of the few sports I do like and it's nothing to do with bottom watching (or not a lot as Jayne says!) :-)
