fridge stench

we have recently started getting an unholy stench every time we open the fridge door on our fridge freezer. we tried every thing (bi carb. total .clean out . everything.) eventually we gave up and bought a brand new fridge freezer and low and behold the stench is back the new fridge freezer is 3 days old, this smell only occours when you open the fridge door/ there is no smell at any other time .HELP PLEASE.

Is it a fishy smell. If so check your wall socket and wiring. I presume you are using the same socket for the new fridge freezer.

However, I am not sure why this would only get this smell if you opened the fridge door.

Thanks for your reply but its not an electrical fault we checked that out from the onset.
the whole thing has us baffled

It can't be anything that has 'gone off' because you wouldn't have transferred it. Sorry, I have no further ideas.

Is there something behind or above that is being warmed by the heat from your fridge when it is working? The action of opening the door could waft the smell from behind and around making it seem as if it comes from inside, perhaps?

nope its spotless at the rear cant smell a thing until the door opens once the door has been open for a min or two the smell goes away but close the door for a few mins the smell returns

Doesn't it have therefore to be something you are keeping in the fridge? Post a list of what's in there.

Have you got a carton of apple juice in there that maybe has got air into it - because that can smell absolutely dreadful. There may be something else that is not airtight because it has been damaged.

spuds carrots turnip broccoli all fresh
bacon and ham all sealed butter / wine sealed bottles beer sealed milk fresh in this morning and a small open container of bi carb to try and capture the smell

p.s. when you eventually track it down, could you post on here what the problem was? I am really fascinated by it now!

It must be a pretty awful smell for you to buy a new fridge.

could you move it to another room for a day to see if the smell travels with it - at least then you'd know if it was the fridge or the kitchen.

it isnt your fridge it is something electrical..for weeks we could smell this awful smell on the landing we thought it was cats peeing on the doorstep...and the smell was wafting up stairs..it took a long time to realise it was the lamp in my daughters bedroom which was faulty and that was emmiting this awful smell..you need to re check your electrics...

But if it wasn't the fridge electrics and came from somewhere else Jenty, why would the smell only be there when the fridge was opened and go when the fridge was shut. The electrical smell is distinctly fishy.

deffo not electrical it will have to be after christmas before we can move the fridge, the unfortunate thing is we have people coming to stay over the festive period i can see the shares in air fresheners rocketing lol.

you sure you are not imagining it? get someone else to sniff who didnt smell it before. imagination can be very powerful. i painted my sky blue bedroom to a light orange once and the very first time i switched the light on in the room afterwards i saw the room as still blue for a tiny split second!

well if its imagination it must be contagous because myself,my wife, three kids, the woman from across the road and two of my pals can all smell it lol

Never mind schiehallion, we have a dead rat dying in our loft space somewhere - a space we can't get to!! Have you ever smelt a dead rodent rotting away. I would swap places with you gladly!!!!
