I don't understand the follwoing joke.

Once upon a time a little elephant
was walking in the jungle and he saw a
mouse. The elephant was a little
frightened and he began to walk backwards.
He fell in a river. When the mouse saw
the water splashing, HE started walking
backwards. He bumped into a rock and
squeaked, "OUCH!" He thought to himself,
"That elephant is tricky. I guess I won't
try to catch that elephant again!" He
went home to his family.
The elephant was so embarrassed,
that he went home. When he told his
family how he got wet, they said that
he was silly. They said that if he ever
saw a mouse again, he should stomp on it.
The elephant was a very kind little
elephant and didn't want to stomp on any
mice. So he decided he would try to make
friends with the next mouse he saw.
