How much prize money should you win on a quiz?

I have had two quiz entries returned this morning with similar remarks about how hard the quiz was and that the prize money offered was not enough in view of how much time was spent on solving it.

As I always offer the same prizes ( 2 x �10 and 1 x �5 for a random entry) and this generally equates to approx 20% to 25% of the money sent to the charity after the prizes are deducted ( ALL money is either prize or donation - I DO NOT keep any of it ), I would appreciate some thoughts/feedback prior to sending out my next quiz in the next few days.

Would you prefer one large prize ( �25 ) or even several smaller prizes equalling the �25?

Or perhaps more of the money going to the charity, therefore less in the prize kitty?

yes this quiz was hard but do people not want a challenge! i think the prize money you offer is quite ok, i do quizzes that offer even less and are sometimes demanding, after all the proceeds go to charity. i have not sent mine in this time only for the reason that i solved all the pictures but could not get the theme, lo and behold it dawned on me earlier today. looking forward to your next quiz i always enjoy them. chorley.

I agree (mostly) with chorley9, but wonder why there had to be all the answers before entering. Which is more important - the charity, or a win ?

I don't know what quiz this relates to, but if people tackle the more difficult quizzes (without seeking too much help!) they must recognise the difficulty, consider that they're up to it, and enjoy the challenge. They wouldn't compete if they didn't enjoy it. The principal aim should be to support the charity. If you're a winner, lucky you. So I suggest that you ignore the complaints.

Thanks for your answers. I do not want anyone to think that these comments are necessarily complaints as I do have a comments box on my paper entry form and therefore expect both good and bad comments. It did, however, set me thinking about the prize money level offered. All of you so far seem to think prize level OK and I will see if this thread attracts any more answers as the evening progresses.

I shall not be available until later to comment further, but I will come back to this thread, so my thanks in the meantime.

I can't beleive that anyone could make such comments. the quizzes are about charity and a bit of fun. If people are doing it to make money then they should do other competitions. Take no notice I wouldn't mind betting that you get more people who are happy with your quizzes than the mecenary ones. I know that I don't stand a chance of winning but I always enjoy a challenge keep up the good work

I think that yours in one of the best quizzes around and because it is pictures it doesnt get spoilt to much

I'd happily pay more that �1 for it its well worth it. Where else can you get as many hours pleasure (is that the right word lol) for such a small amount

a �10 prize seems fair to me -You do not make the money the bigger quizzes make after all

jessiedog - I didn't do this quiz, but I will almost certainly enter in the future. I think the prize money that you give should be for you to decide and you alone.

As has been said the aim is to support the charity and exercise the "grey matter" at the same time. It still amazes me that people have to cheat - it doesn't matter how many answers you get, does it? The charity still gets the money - so why do people have to get others to answer for them? Why in this day and age do people feel the need to get answers at any cost - they must be desperate to get the prize money rather than helping the charity.

i havent tried one of your quizzes yet, but i thought most people did them for fun and to keep the old brain working.Why on earth do people enter them if they are going to complain about the prize. They know what the prize will be before they start .In these times charities need all the help they can get, and nearly everthing is done by unpaid volunteers.Sorry to sound sanctimonious but things like this make me cross.Keep up the good work and ignore the mercenary.

the majority of people doing these quizes aren't doing them for the money they are doing them for a bit of fun, the challange and the chance to give a few bob to the small local charities that people like to support because they can actually see where their money goes. Don't bother with the critics and keep up the good work

Didn't do the quiz - no idea what it was! - but in principle just send for sheets myself to support the charity and have fun. It's good to have something to get you thinking over a cup of tea, the washing up, the walk to the shops etc especially if you are on your own a lot. I don't always send them in and, if I do, I am not concerned with the prize money, merely pleased to have finished the thing!! Surely, most people feel the same. Carry on as you are doing. It's always nice to have one random draw from all entries, as it's then worth sending in the sort of gappy sheet I'm usually left with!

It's not the winning but the taking part and the supporting of the charity that counts, and I say that as a two times winner of your previous quizzes.
I agree, that this quiz was hard, but picture quizzes usually are for me as you can't google a question. However, once I had found a few of the pictures and found a possible theme it was easy to find most of the other pictures. Whether my theme and order is correct remains to be seen, but it was still enjoyable.
The allocation of prizes is just right. In fact, I got the idea of offering two prizes and a lucky dip prize for my Children In Need quizzes from yourself, so it must be good :-)

sorry to be boring but i agree with everyone else. It is upto you to decide but the aim is to raise mony for the Charity. I like the idea of a random draw. As to how easy or hard your quiz was I'll wait till i get mine back before i comment.I will just say yours are always interesting. I liked the use of flicker as well,the pictures were clearer and therefore easier to find LOL
Anyway you have to do more I have just bought some more vouchers from Tesco!!

I go in for these quizzes mainly for my own amusement, and though it would be nice to win, that really isn't the real reason for my taking part.
After all, the prize money is not the appealing factor in a quiz, it is the content and the subjects.
I enjoyed the last quiz from you jessiedog, amd entered with absolutely no chance of winning.
If people are after making money there are other competitions (crosswords, etc) where bigger prizes are offered.

Thank you all for your replies and such a nice surprise that so many people have taken the time to comment, I doubt that I will be able to exit this room until my head has shrunk again after reading all your praise.

It would seem that the consensus of opinion is that the prize money is about the correct level then. I have to admit that I hoped that would be the answer.

To all of you who have never done my quizzes and have asked about them: I usually set picture quizzes as I am hopeless at either solving or setting cryptic clues. I also have set two Dingbats quizzes. My next quiz (which I am just putting the finishing touches to) is a type that I set this time last year where I give a sentence and require the last two words of the sentence. However, they must rhyme. I (obviously) have an answer in mind, but I will award marks on a sliding scale to any other answer depending on how much I like it. So, potentially, there are no incorrect answers.

Romanian is the language of vampires. It is known as the ��
Dracula Vernacular (or Fang Slang, Bat Chat)

This will be coming out in the next few days, when I have stopped tinkering with it (and finished marking the most recent).

Just want to put in my twopennyworth - I agree with all the comments re prizes. To repeat, most of us do these charity quizzes because (a) we enjoy quizzes and (b) we like to support charities. Since I found the AB site I have found a new hobby. Always did quizzes as and when I found them, but this site gives me such a huge choice (I currently have 22 in my file!!). Don't care if I win - just enjoy taking part. Keep up the good work - you have my request for the next one already, I hope. Best wishes, Vickie

Keep doing what you do so very well and take no notice of the "mercenaries" who seem to enter quizzes for profit rather than enjoyment (we can all see their postings on AB in their quest for easy answers)

There are tons of quizzes around for the bounty hunters so ignore them and continue your excellent work.

If I get help (eg from answerbank) doing a quiz, I always send in my entry - asking quiz author to keep any prize i win.
If I manage to complete it all by myself, it would depend on the charity!
