Refused entry to nightclub without student id

On my university graduation night, our class decided to go to a local nightclub. I had planned to meet with my classmates at the club, taking my boyfriend and cousin and my cousins wife (who were not students) with me.

While waiting in the queue there were rumours that entry was with student id only as it was a student night. I had previously gone to this club 2x before on the same weeknight when it wasn't a student night.

2 girls in the queue infront of us got in with drivers licences so I thought, we will be OK, we all had drivers licences and are 23, 26, 30.

When it got to us, the bouncers asked us for student ID. I showed mine but said as it was my graduation could I bring in my boyfriend, my cousin and his wife. They refused. Other people in the line (goups of single girls!) got in without student ID, but I'm assuming because we were two couples we didn't fit the part. We didn't get in.

Other classmates arrived later and got in straight away with friends without student id.

Just wondering what the law is in regards to entry to licensed premises and whether "student id only" is legal in respect of discrimination?? I do understand that clubs have the right to refuse admission.

Its as you point out in your last line. Any club reserves the right to refuse admission- which means they can set any criteria that they like for admission. Unfortunately for you, on the night you went, you didnt meet those criteria. Its not discrimination, its their choice as a business.

They couldve decided that only people sporting a black handbag could get in that night. Theres nothing you can do.
