16 month old co-sleeper and hair puller

Hi all,
Hope you and your little ones are well.
My son has been co-sleeping with us for a long time now. He will go to sleep in his own bed at about 7ish and will be in our bed by about 11ish. I posted a while back and was reassured that co-sleeping wasn't a bad thing and that he would eventually become independent when he is ready. Unfortunately however, our bed is becoming increasingly cramped, to the extent that both my husband and I get very little sleep.
My son loves the comfort and closeness he gets from being in our bed but he wakes many times through the night, probably due to the heat we both give off and that we both change sleep positions.
He also has a strange obsessive relationship with my hair. He finds comfort in pulling and stroking my hair and scratching my scalp (which, quite frankly hurts). He loves to fall asleep holding my hair. This happens 24/7. I try telling him 'no' and distracting him with something else but whilst I am asleep or trying to sleep, that's not really an option (I realise I am being inconsistent).
Anyway, I will get to the point. I really think it's time to get him to sleep in his bed through the night. Do you think it's possible? Also, what do I do about the hair thing? TIA

we have been thinking about getting him his own bed,do you think its too early?obviously ill put the sides up and will probably have it next to our bed until he gets used to it then go in his own room?anyway,my son was the same and used to cling to my top,ten when he was falling asleep removed what it was he had hold of and placed his teddy in his grip, and he now sleeps with this instead of grabbing us!
