The Times page 1, no less, His presidential Tonyness....
Apparently his Tonyness is waiting in the wings with universal support from our conquerors for the paddies to put put the final nail into Europe's coffin. Is the final subjugation complete? Have we been defeated in peace rather that war? Would you prefer Hitler to what we are getting? discuss! Gromit you assured me yesterday that your EU mates hated Tony!

You call the EU "Undemocratic" and then protest when the treaty of Lisbon tries to make it more so.
I think you just want a small weak Britain outside of the most powerful economy in the world being told by the yanks what to do and say.
It's not a President of Europe job though
Job description:
Preside over An annual summit, Prepare the agenda and disolve disputes.
----------------------------------------------------------------
There is no executive role, no decision making power
----------------------------------------------------------------
Despite all that I don't think it's exactly a shoe in for Blair though - but getting support from Angela Merkel's a boost to him as she's probably the best candidate apart from not being about to give up the German chancellorship.
Hmmm - you don't think Tony might be doing a Gordon Brown style Me first then you deal do you?
For anybody interested here's the main runners and riders and their pros and cons

Blair may well be British but in reality he is no different from the long line of those who Hate Britain with treachery as their stock in trade, Blunt, Philby, Heath etc. I have never understood why we need to be immersed in a soup of diametrically diffeenet ingredients brought on by an accident of geography. The new EU president may well start as a nuetured entity but we all know that won't be enough. Like the common market has now somehow evolved into a federal state. You seem to be happy with that jake, well I envy your confidence.
Damning something because of what it might or might not become has a name Geezer - it's paranoia.
And Pro-Europe doesn't mean hating Britain any more than someone who loves London must therefore hate England.
I know that you may find that hard to understand given your prediliction for mildly insulting national epithets "Sweaties, Septics, ...I forget all the rest"
But Go on then I'll buy it you've piqued my interest..Blunt,Philby, Heath....You what? why do you lump an ex-Tory Prime Minister in with a bunch of Soviet spys
If we're Talking "EU Betrayal" Heath had a referendum - and that was just to join a Trading group.
Other later Tory Prime-Ministers signed Maastrict and the Single-European act.
Could you not bring yourself to write : Philby, Blunt, Heath,Thatcher,Major ?
You know there's a certain pattern emerging here isn't there? You don't suppose Cameron might be next on the list do you?

"An Irish 'yes' vote in today's Lisbon treaty referendum could trigger diplomatic moves to install Tony Blair as the first president of the newly reinvigorated European Union.
Speculation is growing the former prime minister may have the backing of French president Nicolas Sarkozy for the role.
Newspapers today reported German chancellor Angela Merkel remains unconvinced by Mr Blair's candidacy. He is seen as a divisive figure on the European stage because of the Iraq war and because of his failure to take Britain into the eurozone."

If Ireland do vote Yes, Poland and the Czech Republic still have to ratify before any President can be installed. If all the countries have not ratified before Cameron is elected, Cameron will call a UK referendum.

well jake I mentioned in a thread yesterday that I do condsider MrsT's contribution an error but as she saved us from socialist tyranny and probably becomming a soviet state so I can forgeive that as an error and no doubt the lady herself would have realised the situation and reversed as only she seems capable off. Yes I'll take Major as you raise him here. But even the Cambrifge cold war spys pale into insignificance when compared to the treachery of Heath. "There are some who think that membership of the common market is somehow a gateway to the surrender of sovriegnty etc etc....." and went on to ridicule dissenters much as you do now.

I had always understood that Tony Blair stood very little chance of being appointed to the Presidency, largely because several of the more influential european leaders think he would be too divisive and controversial - an opinion I would agree with, mostly because it does appear to be generally accepted that the intelligence was massaged to gain UN support for the invasion of Iraq. Nor am i happy with his increasingly open and evangelical attitude to faith.
As for the EU as a whole - I could wish for more emphasis on creating a single trading bloc, which would one hopes materially and positively effect the prices that consumers see - but inevitably if you wish to create a single trading area then some of the federalist ideas are needed - harmonisation of VAT / Sales tax, everyone participating in a single european currency etc.
I dont want a european federation - at least not now ; in 50 years, who knows, people may think its a good idea. This linking of spies and traitors to UK politicians most involved in Britains progress within the EU is simply inaccurate and not worthy of serious consideration.
