for some reason i cannot post on your thread and so I'm trying to cut and paste the reply:

1841 census Tumpy Green, Slimbridge, Dursley,'
John White aged 95 Ag Lab Born Gloucestershire
William White aged 55 Ag lab Born Glos.
William White aged 25 nailor born glos
hester white aged 20 born glos
anne white aged 2 born glos.

Now, 10 years later in 1851, william and hester are still at tumpy green, William snr is still there and aged 70 (they've transcibed the age incorrectly) william is 39 and hester 31 and they have children Ann 9 Charlotte6 and Elizabeth 5 living with them, but no mary.
Tumpy Green Farm, two addresses away, george Lawrence and his family farm 60 acres and they have a servant mary white aged 12 born 1839 slimbridge.
In 1861, the family are still at tumpy green, (William is still a nail maker which is the only glitch) daughter ann is no ,longer there but charlotte is, elizabeth is missing too, but a new daughter Keturah is 9 and a son edward is 6 and a daughter fanny 3. Elizabeth is a dairy maid.
Anne White aged 19 is a servant to the cox family in berkeley,
Elizabeth is aged 16 working for the Ind family in slimbridge.
1871 William Hester and son edward aged 16 are still at tumpy green, william is still a nail maker.
1871 Fanny White aged 13 and Elizabeth White aged 22 both born slimbridge are working as a dairy maid and servant for the fluck family in hill croome, boughton, worcestershire.
In 1881 Fanny is aged 23 a dairy maid for the whitecombe farm in castlemorton worcester.

Now i know why it won't post, too many characters/

as i said, apart from the nailmaker thing, this is quite feasibly the right family, I can't find a mary white marrying in the Dursley district until 1867, which seems very late.
All in all, looking at the history of this family and the way the daughters go off to service, i think this is correct, it's that nailmaker that's the problem, but there simply is no other fanny White the right age and with the right family names in the right area.

Oh on the 1881 census, william and Esther (not hester) are still at tumpy green and he is down as an AG Lab!!!
Esther is given as being born in Berkley which is where the farmer Elizabth and Fanny worked for was born.
hester was born in Berkeley and christened there and her mother was called Katurah Browning.

dot.....unless I've read the above incorrectly this can't be DSJ's Fanny White as this one was born in 1858 and his was married in 1864?

Yes you and DSJ have read it incorrecty, the fanny white born in 1858 was i believe, as i said, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth white, the older sister of mary white and daughter of William white and Hester. I believe, after finding no trace of a fanny white in slimbridge, dursley or cam, that your suggestion was correct, Mary white born 1839 in slimbridge and in service from the age of 12, is fanny white DSJ's great grandmother. I have eliminated every other girl born in the area to w william white in 1839 and 5 years either side. If you re-read all the info I have written, i explain this. Elizabeth White was also I believe, the witness at Fanny and Henry's wedding.
I think I have shown this to be correct by tracing all the children and all possibles.

I have looked at Fanny Jacobs on the census and in 1871 she had 3 children,
catherine mary 5
Fanny Elizabeth 4
William 1
in 1881 she had
Elizabeth 14 (must have dropped the first name Fanny)
Sarah J 9
Annie 6
Emily 4
Thomas H (newborn)
In 1891 she has
Emily 14
Thomas 10

her eldst daughter mary, on the 1881 census is living in service and has dropped her first name catherine and is just mary jacobs aged 15 Housemaid to the rector of harescome St Ptchcombe living at the rectory.
no trace of William on the 1881 or 1891.

The pattern of name changing and an early entry into domestic service carries on from the white family into the jacobs family, this is why i mention it.
