As a child I seem to recall that everyone used to clear their path and a bit of the road in front of their houses, this made it easier for people to walk up the road without slipping on ice and snow, has anyone done this in light of the snow? not one of my neighbours have and locally some people have cleared a patch of path in front of their front door but nothing else.

I think it would be a good thing to get started again

Hiya cazzz,
yes, we've done our path & outside our gate!
sometimes this proves even more lethal cazzz, it's cleared then it freezes over, and we have had "layers" this winter, so the salt gets covered before another fall

Urban myths, disinformation and the fear of the 'compansayshun culture' have a lot to answer for, Cazzz.

Have a look in the 'Law section', on here, for an example of folks' confusion on this.

hi sachs and bobbi

oh I see what you mean bobbi, we cleared ours when it first snowed heavily so there was no ice underneath, it just looks like path!

as a kid i dont remember any major problems when people cleared their paths?
but then thats when people extended the hand of friendship and being a good neighbour cazzz !
I usually clean the walk-way and outside the gate and throw salt. And yes, people long ago were so much more neighbourly and friendlier, and looked out for each other.
My sister lives in a cul-de-sac with about 10 detached bungalows in it and 1 large house at the very top.
All the residents of the bungalows are pensioners but most of them quite fit and able.
A korean family moved into the house just before Xmas and the mother keeps sending the teenage kids out to clear the footpaths of the entire street!!
My friends neighbour cleared their very long path in the their front garden and dumped all the snow behind their neghbours car blocking them in even more!!

I don't know what it is with people but when we went up town the other day with the school being closed and what have you, I could not believe how rude people were and were more or less knocking me and my 6 yr old into slush, heaps of snow etc.. it was as if they were the only important people about!!! Right ticked me off it did!

people are nutters these days, I remember when kids used to offer to clear your paths for a quid
imagine what they're like in a Supermarket, rudeness doesn't even touch it! You'd think some people were going to starve to death.
I seem to remember that people used to clear the snow from outside their houses by throwing a bucket of hot water over it.
You have a long memory, puzzled.

That was before the days of sewers, and they were emptying their toilets.
lol puzzled is being sarcastic I think, as obviously hot water chills quite quickly in freezing weather lol
I've just attempted to clear the garden path from the back door to where the car is parked behind the house, but under the 6 inches of compressed 'soft' snow there is an inch of clear ice welded to the flags on the path!!! I've given it up as a bad job and just put some cat litter over it and some cooking salt!!! Nowt if I'm not resourceful lol
