I love Irish music. Is there such a thing as english music?

What I mean is that Irish music dates back a few hundred years and if there is a band playing Irish in the pub they will play a mixture old instrumentals and songs with lyrics but most of these songs are really old. Do english pubs play old english music and if so what kind of music is it? Does anyone have any links where I could hear some of it?

English music? Loads of it! Check out people like Martin Carthy (with or without Dave Swarbrick), Waterson:Carthy (also featuring Martin Carthy), Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, early Fairport Convention (and myriad off-shoots thereof), Steeleye Span, The Young Coppers, Chris Wood... The list is huge!

Most of the above mix traditional songs with their own material in a similar style.

For contemporary takes on English folk, try Spiers and Boden (or their Bellowhead project), Seth Lakeman, Imagined Village, Show of Hands...

Unfortunately, English music carries with it the seeds of its own demise.
Most pubs specialising in English music are forced to close after a few months, once all the patrons have topped them selves.
