Do you think that cyclist should have to pass a theory test and a off the road bike test before they are allowed out on the road ?.

Short but sweet ^
yes and pay road tax and be fined for riding on the pavement AND have to wear suitable hi vis clothing AND decent lights
How would you do it? On a tandem?

I assisted at my daughter's cycling proficiency last year, and getting any proper idea of their abilities when standing on the pavement is difficult.

I don't believe that at the end of the day, standards would change at all.

Those idiots who ride across red lights know full well they are breaking the law.
they should have to pass a cycling test, some of them go out like loonies
One of my bosses got fined for being drunk on a bike.......mind he'd gone through someone's hedge......
the poster said off road..car drivers have to be tested off road now so it wouldn't be too difficult for cyclists to use the same facilities.
When I was a student I rode home once worse the wear for a few beers.

When I got off the bike I fell over.
i bike a lot ....when a car is behind me i stay right out from the edge lol i bike round country lanes and car drivers come sooooooo close ...when im driving i always over take wide ...
How much government money are we going to throw at this scheme?

I'm sure the new government will write a cheque.
I dont think off road test but definately a cycling road rules test
they could do it the same way motorcyclists do it...
by being followed and watched

yes i think they should because many havent a clue of the rules or of courtesy

however it would be very hard to police...
there is, or their used to be a cycling proficiency test when i was a kid...is this not still going?
you pay for your own car and motorbike tests and lessons...an so you would with this...
i was on my bike the other month and talking on my phone a cop car stopped and the copper went mental at me lol
It's only the basics for kids, Joko.

I think that any user of the road Inc. pedestrians should have the basic knowledge of the highway code . It should be taught in schools.
I don't see much point in cyclists taking a test - it won't make them any better, any more than the driving test does for car drivers many of whom still drive like maniacs.

Highway codes test perhaps, but as a previous poster said, this could (should ?) also apply to pedestrians. mobility scooters, etc.
so in that case canary, should we not test car drivers?
Yes, I do think they should take and pass a decent test - and be obliged to use decent working lights .... That's the first law I would pass if ever I ruled the world!
Chox.
