How will my psychiatrist help?
17 Answers
I've been to see a psychiatrist to try to help my depression and social phobia/anxiety.
In the session I had, he only asked about my medical history, put me on these pills that my body is rejecting (being sick) and told me that I'd be completely better after the next three sessions. Then he'll never need to see me again. (He told me this.)... so what I want to know is, what exactly would a psychiatrist plan to do in 3 sessions, that would 'make me 100% better'? I don't really know what methods of help he would use?
Thanks in advance for your replies. I hope someone can help. Maybe if you, yourself, have been and had psychiatric treatment?

Yes indeed emma, i would be interested to hear how he plans to 'cure' you, after only 3 sessions, just hearing about your medical history and putting you on pills....
(Please dont think that you wont feel somewhat better after 3 sessions, but its just he is making BIG promises, and i feel that is very wrong of him).
Let us know how you get on....and if the pills are making you sick, please tell him, there is bound to be another alternative tablet. x

Personally I think you should go back to your doctor and ask him to refer you to someone else. From personal experience I think psychiatrists are good at 'labelling' patients and then prescribing tablets for the way you are feeling. Tablets can help but they only help with symptoms and not the cause. My advice to you is stop taking your tablets if they are making you sick. There are plenty of people out there than can offer you better help. A psychologist. counsellor, someone who offers cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt). Anyone who offers someone 3 sessions and says he won't need to see you again after that is not worth going back to even for a second session. Pay your doctor a visit and ask him/her to refer you to someone who actually cares and who is willing to help you. There is no time limit and no easy fix for someone suffering from depression/anxiety. It takes time to work through your problems and fears. If you really want to help yourself find a good counsellor. You're worth more than this. Do it now, you won't regret it. Remember though, there is no magic cure. The key is to take one day at a time.

Agree with most of the comments
I would not trust ANY psychiatrist who said this.
There is no way any psychiatrist can pin it down to exactly three sessions (or any number of sessions to be honest).
I suffer from depression and some anxiety and have had it most of my adult life.
I dont think those feeling every FULLY go away, I think it can get worse and can lead to a breakdown for example, but most of us are either a glass half empty or glass half full people.
So how they can say you will be "completely better" are 3 sessions is silly and somewhat dangerous.
Have you been refered to them by a GP, or just pick the name out of the hat. I would question their medical training to be honest.

Hi Emma. I agree with everyone else who have commented that 3 sessions seems a very short time to totally cure someone. I too would be interested to hear how you get on! Having said that, I have suffered depression/anxiety over the years and was fortunate enough to get an excellent psychiatrist in the end, who got me off diazepam and antidepressants (slowly). There was an element of 'Huh-what does he know? I will show him that I can cope!! Maybe he just 'got my goat' and feeling that way helped me to get through it all. Sure, I still have off days and get anxious in certain situations but I am heaps better now. My point is Emma, you need to have some sort of trust/rapport with any therapist-if you don't feel confident in your medic, do see if you can be re-referred. Good luck huns xxxxxx
