Need some quick advice please folks. I've just listed an antique hand mirror on Ebay and they have booted it off. The mirror has a bone handle and because I didn't specify exactly which animal the bone came from, they said it could be from an endangered species (as if!). I'm assuming it may be cow bone, unless anyone on here knows different? Ta.

Were you asking mooch for it?
If you think it's cow bone then relist it as cow bone - unless they're willing to do some sort of scientific analysis they can hardly prove you wrong :)

That's my problem Karen, I've no idea what sort of bone the Victorians used
Where is the mirror from .. do you think?
Cow or Ox (if Chinese)

Handles were once made of elephant ivory, but fossil ivory, such as mammoth, is still sometimes used, and antique razors with ivory scales are occasionally found
Tell them that you "think" its a thigh bone from a Dodo, its hardly endangered and it could get you a good price!!

It's deffo NOT ivory. Now you come to mention it, the mirror is a bit Chinese like. I wonder if I cget away with "bovine bone"
So fib - it's only a wee fib really, and only because they are insisting you be specific when there's no reasonable way you can be.

good idea Ratter!
Are you sure it's not oosic as that was quite popular................
Question Author
Right, I'm going to re-list it as cow bone. I'll keep you posted if they boot it again.

Craft, it is a good job I like you. If you were anyone else, I would tell you to go forth.... xx
mrs O, make sure you list it as Victorian - there is no blame in selling bone/ivory which has been dead for years, that's not promoting the sale of illegal ivory.

I had the same when I was selling some party poppers - I was booted off because they contain explosives, but I was pretty peeved to find loads of other people had got round it by calling them something else.

However - looking at all the bone-handled knives on sale there at the moment - not all are saying cow-bone. Have a look.
