Jonathan Swift was first to use the expression in writing - as 'up a-dazy' - in the early 18th century. The 'up' part is clear enough, as it is used when lifting a child. The ending was just something made up on the same basis as 'lackadaisy' had been made up from 'lackaday'...just a childish addition, as it were.
