It's not gordon bennett it's gawd "n" bennett.
The full phrase in the dim and distant past used to be "May god and Saint Benedict preserve us.

a natural diminutive of Benedict is Bennett so the phrase got shortened to God and Bennett, everyone knew what it meant so the "preserve us" part got dropped

so it became god and bennett and say it with a cockney accent it becomes Gawd "n" Bennett
