I got a project in work I have to update.

It compares statistics for an area in Belfast against the statistics for Northern Ireland as a whole.

Here is an example of my problem: 'the area has an everage unemployemnt rate of 12%, compared to 6% for their Northern Ireland counterparts'.

Now as the area is in Northen Ireland, and its figure is part of the whole Northern Ireland figure...they arent actually counterparts.

I hope somebody can understand this....and give me a good word to use instead!!

Thanks.

how about "the area has.....compared to 6% for the whole of Norther Ireland" or "....."compared to 6% for the whole of the rest of Northern Ireland if you have taken out the Belfast total"

Thats basically what I have been doing....but theres hundreds of different figures, and I'm trying to change them about a bit so it doesnt get overly repetitive.

compared to the rest of Northern Ireland combined?

What about this area has a rate of x% as opposed to the national rate of x%

or area y is statistically significant in having a rate of x% which is x% above / below the average for NI as a whole

or in contrast to the national average of x% in NI area y's rate is x%

if there are loads of comparisons like this, do a chart!
